                                PREFACE

A word to explain the organization of the bibliography may be
helpful. The overall order is chronological, beginning with 1928, and
going to the present. Within each year, the material is divided into 13
categories, specified by the following subheadings:

     1. Books
     2. Unpublished book length manuscripts
     3. Published papers
     4. Institutes and lecture series
     5. Lectures and unpublished papers
     6. Book reviews
     7. Courses given
     8. Responses and contributions to congresses
     9. Blurbs and forewords
     10. Interviews
     11. Occasional remarks
     12. Translations
     13. Notes taken by students
     14. Audio CD's published by the Lonergan Research Institute.

For the most part, these categories should be self-explanatory.
Books refers to published works, including the "semi-published" text
books done at the Gregorian University Press. "Unpublished book
length manuscripts" was included to provide for what is not officially
published, but too long to be a "lecture or unpublished paper."
"Courses given" will include unpublished or mimeographed notes when
applicable. "Notes taken by students" means records made of a course,
sometimes checked over by Lonergan himself, sometimes not. At times a
particular piece of work seemed to fall in more than one category, and
then a prudential judgment had to be made. No effort was made to
catalog existing tape recordings, but the audio CD's published by the
Lonergan Research Institute have been included in a new category 14.
Mention of a work in the bibliography does not mean that the
work is available. Within the thirteen categories, the order is
sometimes chronological, sometimes alphabetical; no particular
attention was paid to this.

Each entry has a relatively unvarying "catalog number." The
first 2 digits of this 6-digit number correspond to the year (with 00
referring to 2000, the second 2 digits to the category, and the third
2 digits to the order within the category. These numbers are used for
cross-referencing. An attempt has been made to cross-index the entries
as thoroughly as possible. In some cases, that proved impractical -
for example, for all the talks entitled "Insight." When more than 5
cross-references exist, this will be noted by an "etc."; it will then
be necessary to chase down all the sub-references to establish the
full tally of cross-references.

Sources for this bibliography are a bibliography prepared by the
Dublin Lonergan Centre in September, 1978, and the files of the
Lonergan Research Institute in Toronto. Thanks are due to Frederick
Crowe, SJ, Michael Shields, SJ, Charles Hefling, Jr. and John F.
Brezovec for their help in assembling and checking the bibliography.
The late and lamented Michael O'Callaghan did most of the laborious
work of preparing and reviewing the bibliographical entries of the
first two editions.

In spite of the best attempts, errors and omissions have no doubt
occurred, and those who have occasion to use the bibliography will
note them. The Editor would very much appreciate being informed, so
that the entries can be supplemented or corrected for the next
edition.
