I highly recommend it. <br><br> ************* <br><br> Let me begin with a links to a few relatively new software Firewalls that all offer a FREE basic version. <br><br> Armor Security Suite v2 <A HREF="http://www.tallemu.com/downloads.html"> Firewall</A>. This Firewall has been highly rated by <A HREF="http://scotsnewsletter.com/index.htm"> Scott's Newsletter</A>. <br><br> Comodo <A HREF="http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/"> Firewall</A>. Comodo has been around for a while, but the current release seems to be exceptionally solid. <br><br> From the creators of PCTools, a well known purveyor of DOS tools. "FireWall Plus" appears to be a clone of ZoneAlarm. I took only a quick peek, but if you use it, please report back your experiences. Check out <A HREF="http://www.download.com/3000-10435_4- 10750039.html"> Firewall Plus </A> version 3.0 <br><br> ************* <br><br> Its true; XP has a built in UnZip'per and it works well. However, if you ever have a need to compress/uncompress OTHER formats this FREE Utility is available: <A HREF="http://www.freewarefiles.com/program_9_93_3344.html"> ZipGenius </A> version 6.0.3.1150. <br><br> 7-Zip is a free "feature loaded" Compressor Decompressor that handles the unpacking of almost every format (including odd ones like .ISO and .MSI or .EXE suitcase installers). Get it here: <A HREF="http://uberdownloads.com/7-zipe.html"> 7-Zip </A>. Caution when installing: the 7-Zip installer attempts to also install six or seven other mostly useless utilities BUT you can refuse them at install time. <br><br> ************* <br><br> How many of you did a real delete on a file in Windows and wish you hadn't? Worry no more with this free undelete utility: <A HREF="http://www.freewarefiles.com/program_9_165_24002.html"> UnDelete Plus </A> version 2.93. <br><br> Want to know the IP of someone probing your Internet connection? System Internals offers a FREE "End Point" connection viewing utility called <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Networking/TcpView.mspx"> TcpView</a>. From the IP you can do a <A HREF="http://network-tools.com/"> NetWork Lookup</a> and obtain the ISP's ID in the event you desire to make an email or telephone "Abuse" report. <br><br> If you have a need to provide customer support or assistance to another PC user on the Internet, this remote viewing software allows just that. Its only a megabyte in size, and like PopNote, its free for personal use. Its called <A HREF="http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx"> TeamView</a>. Check it out. <br><br> ************* <br><br> A Firewall is a necessity if you connect to the Internet. I also think anyone with a PC should have a decent virus scanner. There are several good free ones out there. However, I dislike any program that runs un- necessarily in the background. I consider a virus scanner to be one of those. Good operating practice dictates you scan any new program before running it. However, my preference is to do it MANUALLY, rather than having a virus scanner running constantly in the background using resources of my PC when its not required. In this regard I can personally recommend the <A HREF="http://www.clamwin.com/"> ClamWin Virus Scanner</a> or the USB etc. "portable" version <A HREF="http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable"> ClamWin Portable</a>. These are also open source utilities, which I believe provide greater overall security. The full version also enables right-click menu integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer, if you want that. <br><br> ************* <br><br> Are you looking for a reasonable alternative to Microsoft's Windows? If the answer is yes and Linux is not your cup of tea, maybe <A HREF="http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html"> React Operating System </a> is for you. This is an Open Source Project (like Mozilla) with much exciting promise. Its a real working clone (developed in the C++ language) of the Windows NT platform, not an emulator like WINE running on top of some other OS. <br><br> ************* <br><br> Eudora is alive and well! Eudora is one of the best email program for people who get and send lots of email. The Penelope project's latest release is Version 8. Eudora is now open source and based on Mozilla's Thunderbird core.
