CONFIGURING YOUR PC TO RUN POPNOTE Before proceeding, you need to be aware that for PopNote to signal properly (that is receive back an echo of what you send as well as receive replies from the remotes), PopNote requires that two UDP ports (54538 and 54539) be allowed to pass traffic in either direction through your modem, router and firewall, or whatever combination of those you have. Without this PopNote will not work properly. Opening these two ports will in no way compromize the security of your computer. Unblocking restrictions to these two ports (or any ports used by other IM or game clients) can be a highly frustrating and daunting task for some users. However, IF you have a genuine use for a private channel peer to peer IM client like PopNote, the end result will be reward enough for the effort you expend. Things to be aware of: ------------------------------------------------------ Many Modems (DSL and Cable) have built in rudimentary firewalls that block most all incoming ports. These firewall can be turned off (by enabling Port Forwarding or DMZ) by accessing the Modems setup menu vi your Browser. Check your Modem's manual for the access IP address. All Windows XP versions come with a rudimentary firewall that blocks all incoming ports by default. XP's firewall can be turned off. I strongly recommend you do this in any case and obtain a better more configurable software based firewall. Most all Routers can be set to either Port Forward specific ports on any Node or DMZ (pass everything) to any node. Again, you access its setup menu vi your Browser. Check the Router manual for the access IP address. If you DMZ the node your PC uses on your router, I strongly suggest installing a good software firewall.
