HOW TO CONFIGURE YOUR PC TO RUN POPNOTE Before proceeding, you need to be aware that for PopNote to signal properly (that is receive back an echo of what you send as well as receive popnotes from other users), PopNote requires that two UDP ports (54538 and 54539) be allowed to pass traffic in either direction through your modem, router and firewall, or whatever combination of those you have. Without this PopNote will not work. Unblocking restrictions to these two ports can be a highly frustrating and daunting task for some users. However, IF you have a genuine use for a private channel peer to peer IM client like PopNote, the end result will be reward enough for the effort you expend. Things to be aware of: ------------------------------------------------------ Having several firewalls enabled in the path from the Internet to your PC does not improve your security, and could complicates things. Therefore we suggest: Newer DSL Modems have built in rudimentary firewalls that block most all incoming ports. This modem firewall can safely be disabled by accessing the Modems setup menu vi your Browser using the IP address of 192.168.1.254 Select the modems firewall menu choice and enable either DMZ or Port Follow through. Windows XP SP1 comes with a rudimentary firewall that blocks incoming ports by default. We recommend you disable it and use a better 3rd party firewall like ZoneAlarm (set to Medium security). If you are running XP SP2, that firewall is minimally sufficient. When the alert box pops up, click Stop Blocking. Most all Routers can be set to either Port Forward specific ports to any Node or DMZ any node. Again, you access its setup menu vi your Browser. Try the setup address of 192.168.1.1 or check the Router manual for any non standard address. If you DMZ the node your PC uses from your Router, that PC must have a software firewall activated.
